From Valkenburg to Dinant
177 km – 1800 D+
The Meuse, a river rich in history and heritage.
Traveling along the Meuse allows you to realize the rich heritage it has left over time.
The official and suggested starting point for this itinerary is Valkenburg. Famous for its cycling culture, Valkenburg hosts the finish of the Amstel Gold Race every year and was the venue for the 2012 UCI Road World Championships. The atmosphere in Valkenburg, located in a country where cycling is king, is perfect for the beginning of an adventure.
After about ten kilometers on the perfect roads of the Amstel, you will cross Maastricht and then gradually follow the Meuse River towards Liège. Along the way, you will encounter a mix of RAVeL paths and charming country roads. Keep your eyes wide open because there are numerous wonders to behold.
The Fabrique
As you leave the Netherlands, you will glide across the Hesbaye plateaus, but beware of the wind ! The Hesbaye region is known for its open and flat landscape, which can make cycling a bit challenging when faced with strong winds.
Perched on these rural balconies, you should just avoid entering "La Fabrique," the industrial zone that shapes the history of the Meuse basin. The region's industrial heritage is significant, and while cycling along the Meuse, you can admire the scenic countryside while bypassing the industrial areas.
Indeed, between Huy and Liège, the traces of the steel industry's history are abundant. They serve as a testament to the fact that the Meuse River has been and will remain a cherished route for trade and the development of the region. The industrial heritage along this stretch of the river reflects the important role it has played in the economic growth and prosperity of the area.
Passing through Huy marks a turning point in your adventure : the arrival in the Condroz via Namur and its heights will immediately charm you. The cliffs overlooking the Meuse River may hide a breathtaking sunrise or sunset. So choose your departure time wisely to fully appreciate these delights. The picturesque landscapes and the play of light on the river create a truly magical atmosphere that will enhance your journey along the Meuse.
Along the towpaths until Dinant.
Between Namur and Dinant, allow yourself to glide along the towpath, no longer paying attention to your speedometer. Only the flowing water and the breeze caressing your cheek should dictate the passing of time at this moment. Let go of any time constraints and immerse yourself in the serene atmosphere of the Meuse River. Enjoy the peacefulness of the surroundings and let the gentle rhythm of your ride along the halage carry you away.
As you venture further inland, you will discover some hidden gems from the past. Breathe in the absolute tranquility as you cycle through the most beautiful corners of Wallonia, such as Sosoye and the Molignée Valley.
Take the time to embrace the passing of time at the Abbey of Maredsous before enjoying the fresh Mosan air as you follow the RAVeL path heading south.
From Dinant to Valkenburg
165 km - 2300 hm
The steep villages of the Condroz.
You are in Dinant, the city of the great Sax, the father of the saxophone.
Take the opportunity to refuel on the promenade, taste its famous pastries, and why not take a pedalo ride?
Enough joking around, from here things can get more challenging: the ascent won't be easy. You'll be moving from village to village on gentle slopes, sometimes through forests, sometimes exposed to the wind.
The Condroz region will present you with its most beautiful roller coaster-like hills until Andenne, where you will find a bit of calmness along the Meuse River.
From the Mur of Huy to the Cauberg
After a mandatory pilgrimage to the Mur de Huy, the Royale Mosane suggests you enter the Pays de Liège. But beware of its hilly terrain !
Up and down the hills of the former principality, you will notice that urbanization becomes denser. A new atmosphere awaits you in this urban landscape.
We have thought of you and tried to make you discover the secret passages of the Province to reach the terraces of Dalhem via the Pays de Herve.
Amstel Gold Race
You have left some strength on the Mosan slopes and in the hinterland of Liège. You deserve a break before finishing this royal adventure.
Once you arrive in Visé, all you have to do is enjoy the cherry on top : returning to the Netherlands via the routes of the Amstel Gold Race is a dessert that will leave a sweet taste in your legs.
In the Netherlands, the roads are perfect, and cyclists are kings. Tulips, windmills, delightful valleys. Rise up and admire the palette of colors that unfolds before you.
One final ascent, the Cauberg. Mathieu van der Poel awaits you there. Experience the electrifying atmosphere of the Amstel Gold Race before enjoying a refreshing beer on one of the terraces in Valkenburg.
Ca y est, la Royale Mosane est maintenant à vous. Bravo !
